**Srinagar, India –** The Indian government has banned two prominent Kashmiri organizations, the Awami Action Committee (AAC) and the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM), citing their alleged involvement in anti-national activities, support for terrorism, and promotion of secessionist movements. The ban, effective for five years, was announced Tuesday by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The AAC, led by influential cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference and head cleric of Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid, and the JKIM, headed by Shia leader Masroor Abbas Ansari, another senior Hurriyat leader, were accused of engaging in unlawful activities prejudicial to India’s sovereignty and security.
The MHA’s notification detailed accusations against both groups, including mobilizing funds for terrorist activities, promoting secessionism, inciting violence, and undermining the constitutional authority of the Indian government. Specific instances cited against the AAC included shouting anti-India slogans, delivering speeches advocating for J&K’s separation from India, and inciting stone-pelting. Evidence presented included several cases filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Similarly, the JKIM was accused of similar activities, including fostering anti-India propaganda and inciting unrest. The MHA stated that both organizations displayed a clear disregard for India’s constitutional framework and actively worked to destabilize the region.
This action marks a significant escalation in the Indian government’s efforts to suppress separatist movements in Jammu and Kashmir. The ban prohibits the activities of both organizations and their members for the next five years.
