Tue Mar 11 19:27:35 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Ceasefire Talks Resume in Doha Amidst Tensions
**Doha, Qatar** – A new round of ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas began Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, with a senior Hamas official expressing optimism for progress. Abdul Rahman Shadid stated that Hamas is approaching the talks “positively and responsibly,” hoping for tangible advancements towards a second phase of the agreement. This follows the expiration of the initial 42-day truce in early March.
While Israel has sent a negotiating team, it has yet to publicly comment on the talks. Hamas, however, has accused Israel of stalling and reneging on the agreement, citing the halting of electricity to Gaza’s desalination plant and the cessation of aid deliveries as examples of bad faith. These actions, Hamas claims, have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, causing shortages of food, medicine, and fuel.
The differing approaches of both sides are a major hurdle. Hamas seeks immediate negotiations for the next phase, while Israel favors extending the current one. The first phase, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, began January 19th, resulting in a prisoner exchange but failing to secure a lasting peace.
Despite the ongoing talks, tensions remain high. Israel has conducted daily airstrikes in Gaza in recent days, including one on Tuesday that killed four men. The Israeli military justified the strikes as targeting militants posing a threat. These actions, coupled with the ongoing humanitarian crisis, cast a shadow over the negotiations.
Further complicating matters are conflicting signals from the US. While US hostage envoy Adam Boehler held direct talks with Hamas, expressing optimism for the release of more hostages in the coming weeks, Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed the prospects of a breakthrough.
The current ceasefire follows over 15 months of conflict that resulted in devastating losses on both sides. Over 1,200 Israelis and at least 48,503 Palestinians were killed, mostly civilians. The ongoing negotiations hold significant importance for the future of the region, yet the path to a lasting peace remains uncertain.
