Wed Mar 12 09:17:35 UTC 2025: ## BJP Sweeps Haryana Mayoral Elections, Congress Suffers Second Consecutive Defeat

**Chandigarh, March 12, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a resounding victory in the Haryana municipal corporation elections, winning nine out of ten mayoral seats. This marks a second consecutive electoral defeat for the Congress party, which failed to gain significant ground despite fielding candidates in key areas.

The BJP’s triumph includes key wins in Gurugram and Rohtak, the stronghold of senior Congress leader Bhupinder Hooda. In Gurugram, BJP’s Raj Rani Malhotra defeated Congress candidate Seema Pahuja by over one lakh votes. Similarly, in Rohtak, BJP’s Ram Avtar secured a substantial victory over Congress’ Surajmal Kiloi. Other BJP wins included Ambala (Shailja Sachdeva), Faridabad (Parveen Joshi), Hisar (Praveen Popli), Karnal (Renu Bala Gupta), Panipat (Komal Saini), Sonipat (Rajiv Jain), and Yamunanagar (Suman). An independent candidate, Dr. Inderjit Yadav, a former BJP member, won in Manesar.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini attributed the BJP’s sweeping victory to the people’s endorsement of the “triple-engine” government, referring to the BJP’s control at the central, state, and local levels. He expressed gratitude to the voters and highlighted the government’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “viksit Bharat” (developed India). Haryana Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda echoed this sentiment, promising greater development for the state.

The Congress, which performed poorly in last year’s assembly elections, fielded several candidates, including in Gurugram, marking a more significant participation in local polls than previously. The BJP deployed prominent leaders, including Chief Ministers Saini (Rajasthan) and Rekha Gupta (Delhi), to counter the Congress’s efforts, which included former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot and Mr. Hooda.

Despite the Congress’ increased efforts, the results were heavily in favor of the BJP. Voter turnout was reportedly a low 41%, a record low compared to the assembly elections. Several ward members were also elected unopposed. The Congress’s poor showing is considered a major setback, particularly in Rohtak, considered Hooda’s bastion.
