Wed Mar 12 06:59:50 UTC 2025: ## BJP Sweeps Haryana Municipal Polls, Dealing Congress Crushing Defeat

**Chandigarh, [Date]** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a resounding victory in the Haryana municipal elections, winning or leading in mayoral races across almost all major cities. This represents a significant setback for the Congress party, which suffered a heavy defeat in the state assembly elections last year and has now faced another crushing blow in these local polls.

The BJP has already secured mayoral wins in Ambala, Rohtak, and Gurugram, with its candidates winning by substantial margins. In Gurugram, BJP’s Raj Rani defeated Congress candidate Seema Pahuja by over 95,000 votes. Rohtak, a Congress stronghold and the bastion of senior leader Bhupinder Hooda, saw BJP’s Ram Avtar win by more than 45,000 votes. Similarly, in Ambala, BJP’s Shailja Sachdeva triumphed over her Congress opponent.

The BJP is also leading in mayoral races in Faridabad, Hisar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, and Yamunanagar. Only in Manesar is the BJP trailing, with an independent candidate, a former BJP member, currently in the lead.

Despite fielding candidates, including in the high-profile Gurugram mayoral race, the Congress struggled to make any significant inroads. The BJP deployed top leaders, including Rajasthan Chief Minister Nayab Saini and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, for campaigning. The Congress countered with Sachin Pilot and Bhupinder Hooda, but to no avail.

Voter turnout was a disappointing 41%, a record low for such elections, compared to the 68% turnout in the Assembly elections. A notable number of ward members (26) were elected unopposed.

The BJP’s sweeping victory is seen as a further consolidation of their power in Haryana, highlighting the Congress party’s ongoing struggles to regain its political footing in the state.
