**New Delhi, March 11, 2025** – Bharti Airtel announced today a landmark agreement with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet service to India. This collaboration follows a recent meeting between SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed enhanced technological cooperation.
The partnership will explore various avenues, including offering Starlink equipment through Airtel’s extensive retail network and providing Starlink services to Airtel’s business customers. A key focus will be connecting underserved rural communities, schools, and healthcare facilities across India. SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell expressed excitement about the potential of Starlink to transform internet access in India.
While subject to regulatory approvals for SpaceX to operate in India, this agreement marks a significant step towards bridging the digital divide. Many remote areas currently lack reliable internet access due to the challenges of traditional infrastructure deployment. Starlink’s satellite-based system promises to deliver high-speed broadband (25-220 Mbps) to even the most remote regions, impacting a nation with nearly 1 billion mobile users.
Pricing details for Starlink in India are yet to be announced, although previous estimates suggested a potential annual cost of ₹158,000 for the first year, decreasing to ₹115,000 in subsequent years. This contrasts with India’s current reputation for having some of the world’s cheapest internet data. International pricing varies widely, ranging from $10 per month in Kenya to $120 in the US.
India’s internet infrastructure has seen dramatic growth in recent years, with internet subscriptions surging from 250 million in 2014 to over 960 million in 2024. Broadband connections have increased even more dramatically, from 60 million to 940 million during the same period. This partnership with Starlink aims to further accelerate this progress, bringing high-speed internet to areas previously unconnected. This announcement follows SpaceX’s recent deal to establish its first Tesla showroom in India.
