**Chennai, March 12, 2025** – Construction on three vehicular subways along the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway (NH-45) is set to begin shortly. The ₹89.26 crore project, spearheaded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aims to address accident-prone black spots in Chengalpattu district at Maduranthakam, Padalam, and Pukkathurai.
The subways, designed to accommodate pedestrians, bicycles, and cars, will range in length from 840 meters (Maduranthakam) to 1,090 meters (Padalam). The project also includes a 1,175-meter flyover at the Tindivanam-Krishnagiri road junction.
Preliminary work, including service lane construction, utility relocation, and stormwater drain development, is already underway. Once service lanes are completed, traffic will be diverted to allow for main carriageway construction. Authorities report approximately 7.8% of the total work is complete. Project completion is anticipated by October 2025.
Local residents, like K. Nehru, whose biryani shop was affected by road widening in Pukkathurai, welcome the project, citing a significant increase in accidents since the pandemic due to speeding motorists. The subways are seen as crucial in improving safety and reducing the frequency of accidents.
