**Hull, England –** A major maritime incident unfolded in the North Sea on Monday, after a cargo ship collided with a US military-chartered tanker carrying jet fuel, resulting in a fire, significant smoke plume, and concerns over multiple toxic hazards.
The incident, approximately 10 miles off the coast of Hull, involved the container ship *Solong* and the Stena Immaculate tanker, which was carrying approximately 220,000 barrels of A1 jet fuel under US military charter. The impact caused a rupture in the tanker, resulting in a fire and release of fuel into the water. The *Solong*, which was carrying 15 containers of sodium cyanide, also experienced a fire.
A large-scale rescue operation, coordinated by the UK Coastguard, successfully rescued dozens of crew members. Thirty-six individuals were assessed by ambulance crews, but none required hospital treatment. Thirteen of the fourteen crew members from the *Solong* were rescued, with efforts to locate the missing crew member underway. All crew members aboard the *Stena Immaculate* are accounted for.
The incident prompted the suspension of all vessel movements in the Humber estuary. The German Central Command for Maritime Emergencies dispatched a vessel equipped for fire fighting and oil recovery. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch is investigating the cause of the collision.
While the immediate threat from the jet fuel is considered lessened due to its volatility and quick degradation, environmental concerns remain. Experts warned that the spilled jet fuel and sodium cyanide pose significant risks to marine life, particularly in a nearby harbor porpoise breeding ground.
The collision, while rare in the busy North Sea, highlights the potential for serious consequences in such incidents. Previous North Sea collisions have resulted in fatalities and significant environmental damage. The investigation into the cause of Monday’s collision is expected to be thorough.
