Tue Mar 11 15:56:44 UTC 2025: ## Mumbai Court Grants Bail to Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi in Aurangzeb Remarks Case

**MUMBAI, INDIA** – A Mumbai court granted anticipatory bail to Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi on Tuesday, following his recent controversial remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Azmi, who is also the Maharashtra unit president of the Samajwadi Party and currently suspended from the state legislative assembly until March 26, was charged last week under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a complaint filed at the Marine Drive police station.

The charges stem from Azmi’s statements asserting that Aurangzeb’s reign saw India’s borders extend to Afghanistan and Myanmar, boasting a 24% share of the global GDP, and referring to the period as a “golden age.” He further described the conflict between Aurangzeb and Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj as a purely “political battle.”

The court granted Azmi bail on the condition that he furnish a surety bond of Rs 20,000. The MLA’s comments have sparked considerable controversy.
