**New Delhi, India** – Over 540 Indians, lured by fake job offers to Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries, have been rescued from a major cybercrime network and are being repatriated to India. A coordinated effort between Indian embassies, the Myanmar army, and Thai authorities secured the release of the victims, who were forced to participate in fraudulent activities at call centers operating along the Myanmar-Thailand border.
Two flights are bringing the rescued individuals back to India. The first, an Indian Air Force plane carrying 283 people, landed yesterday. A second flight is expected to arrive today from Mae Sot, Thailand, carrying the remaining individuals. At least 42 of the rescued individuals are from the Telugu states, according to Union Minister Bandi Sanjay.
The victims were allegedly sold to these call centers after being promised high-paying jobs. The operations are based in the Golden Triangle region, a known cybercrime hotspot bordering Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the victims were engaged in various cybercrimes and fraudulent activities.
The Indian government reiterated its warnings against such scams, urging citizens to thoroughly verify job offers from foreign employers through Indian missions abroad, recruiting agents, and companies before accepting employment. This rescue follows the December arrest of Kamran Haider alias Zaidi in Hyderabad, an agent accused of luring Indians into similar cybercrime operations.
