**Jerusalem/Washington D.C.** – A senior US envoy, Adam Boehler, has held unprecedented direct talks with Hamas leaders, expressing confidence that a deal for the release of all hostages held in Gaza could be reached within weeks. Boehler, speaking to CNN Sunday, acknowledged the unusual nature of the meeting, given the US designation of Hamas as a terrorist organization. However, he stated the meeting was “very helpful” and left the door open for further discussions.
The talks come amidst a tense standoff following Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the capture of over 250 hostages, some of whom are American. While some hostages have been released as part of a preliminary truce, approximately 58 remain in Gaza.
Boehler acknowledged Israel’s concerns regarding the US engagement with Hamas, emphasizing that the US operates independently of Israel and is solely focused on securing the release of all hostages. He indicated a potential deal could free all prisoners, not just American citizens.
The envoy’s comments follow President Trump’s recent warning to Hamas, threatening further action against Gaza if all hostages are not released. The situation remains precarious, with both sides disputing the implementation of a more permanent peace agreement.
In addition to the Gaza hostage crisis, Boehler also vowed to travel to Syria to secure the return of Austin Tice, an American journalist kidnapped in 2012. Boehler stated his intention to bring Tice home, dead or alive, working with the FBI if necessary.
The conflict has resulted in a devastating loss of life, with over 1,200 deaths reported on the Israeli side and at least 48,458 on the Palestinian side according to the UN. Boehler clarified that, as of now, the US would support Israel if it opted to resume intense fighting in Gaza, unless instructed otherwise by President Trump.
