**Nalgonda, Telangana:** The Nalgonda SC/ST court delivered a landmark verdict in the sensational Pranay murder case, which captivated the Telugu states. Accused Subhash Kumar Sharma (A2) received the death penalty, while the remaining accused were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Pranay Kumar was murdered on September 14, 2018, allegedly orchestrated by Maruthi Rao, the father of Pranay’s wife Amrutha. Rao, who opposed his daughter’s inter-caste marriage, hired a gang to kill Pranay. Eight individuals were charged in 2019, following a high-profile police investigation. After a trial lasting over five years, the court concluded its hearing recently and issued its final judgment.
Maruthi Rao, the main accused (A1), died by suicide in 2020. While Subhash Kumar Sharma remained in jail awaiting trial, Asgar Ali (A3) was already imprisoned on separate charges. The other accused—Bari (A4), Kareem (A5), Sravan Kumar (A6), Shiva (A7), and Nizam (A8)—were out on bail. The accused pleaded for leniency, citing health issues and dependents. Sravan Kumar, Amrutha’s uncle, claimed innocence.
Pranay and Amrutha’s love marriage in January 2018 led to conflict between their families, resulting in cross-complaints to the police. Amrutha publicly affirmed her desire to remain with Pranay. Pranay was stabbed to death while returning from a hospital with Amrutha and her aunt.
The verdict brings a conclusion to a widely publicized case that highlighted the issue of honor killings in the region.
