**Chennai, March 10, 2025** – Recent observations of bird families in Chennai’s waterbodies have revealed fascinating variations in parenting styles. Photographer Prince Frederick captured images showcasing the distinct approaches of Bronze-winged jacanas, Purple moorhens, and Eurasian coots.
Bronze-winged jacanas exhibit a unique single-parent system, with the male solely responsible for raising the young. While allowing some independence, the vigilant father swiftly gathers his chicks under his wings at the first sign of danger. In contrast, Purple moorhens display a stricter parenting style, with parents exhibiting aggressive responses to persistent begging for food from their young. Images show the chicks with a purple breast patch, suggesting they may be past the most demanding stage.
Eurasian coots, on the other hand, demonstrate a cooperative approach, with both parents actively involved in raising and protecting their offspring. They work together to ensure the safety of their young in the face of perceived threats. These observations highlight the diversity of avian family structures and parenting strategies within Chennai’s ecosystem. The photographs, taken at various locations around the city including Ottiyambakkam and Karapakkam between February 24th and March 5th, 2025, offer a compelling glimpse into the daily lives of these bird families.
