Bengaluru, March 9, 2025 – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched a full-scale investigation into the gold smuggling case involving Kannada actress Ranya Rao, in collaboration with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The CBI has registered a case against Rao following her arrest last Monday by DRI officials at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Authorities seized 14.2 kg of smuggled gold from her upon arrival from Dubai.
Rao’s arrest has prompted a wider investigation into potential international smuggling networks. The DRI had previously alerted the CBI to the possibility of a larger operation, leading to the formation of CBI teams now deployed at Bengaluru and Mumbai airports. The CBI’s investigation will focus on identifying any accomplices and unraveling the extent of the smuggling network, including potential involvement of government officials from various agencies, such as customs, police, and airport authorities.
Rao reportedly admitted to frequent travel to Dubai, the US, and Europe during questioning. Her laptop and phone have been seized and sent for forensic analysis. The CBI is analyzing her call data records, which has already expanded the investigation to Delhi and Mumbai. The agency plans to investigate the assistance provided to smugglers at various airports and the potential national network facilitating the illegal import of gold. While currently in DRI custody, Rao is expected to be questioned by CBI officials soon.
