**Balangir, Odisha:** A mathematics teacher in Odisha’s Balangir district was compelled to attend school with a saline drip after his request for sick leave was allegedly denied by the school’s vice principal. Prakash Bhoi, a teacher at Bhainsa Adarsha Vidyalaya, had travelled to attend his grandfather’s funeral on March 6th and subsequently fell ill. His request for sick leave was reportedly refused by Bijayalaxmi Pradhan, the school’s vice principal and acting principal, who instead ordered him to report to the District Education Officer (DEO).
Despite his deteriorating health, Mr. Bhoi travelled to the DEO’s office in Balangir. His condition worsened, requiring a hospital visit, but Ms. Pradhan allegedly only cared about his return time for verification, rather than his well-being. Unable to afford private treatment due to lack of cash and a malfunctioning UPI system, he returned to the office and worked until late evening before finally receiving medical attention.
Even after seeking medical help, Mr. Bhoi was reportedly ordered to return to school for exam preparations. With no other options, he arrived at school with the IV drip still attached, prompting his colleagues to rush him to the hospital.
Mr. Bhoi alleges this is not an isolated incident, claiming he has been repeatedly denied sick leave and subjected to mental harassment by Ms. Pradhan, while other teachers receive leave more readily. The Patnagarh Block Education Officer (BEO), Prasad Majhi, has assured an investigation and promised action against those responsible.
