New Delhi, March 10, 2025 – Congress members from Kerala and Tamil Nadu today urged the Parliament to address the plight of ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers in Kerala. The MPs highlighted the workers’ month-long protest over poor remuneration and lack of social security benefits.
Shashi Tharoor, raising the issue during Zero Hour, described the ASHA workers as “unsung heroes” who played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic but are now facing financial hardship and a lack of recognition. He questioned whether their contributions are being overlooked due to their gender. Fellow Kerala MP K.C. Venugopal echoed these concerns, highlighting the ongoing blame game between the state and central governments, which he argued is hindering a resolution. RSP MP N.K. Premchandran also supported the call for improved treatment of the ASHA workers. The MPs’ statements underscore the growing demand for better compensation and social security measures for these essential healthcare workers.
