Mon Mar 10 10:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Google Chromecast 2nd Gen and Chromecast Audio Users Hit by Widespread Casting Error
**Mountain View, CA —** A widespread issue is affecting Google Chromecast (2nd generation) and Chromecast Audio users, preventing them from casting any audio or video content. Affected users are encountering an “Untrusted device” error message, rendering their devices unusable for streaming.
The error, appearing in various casting apps, indicates the device cannot be verified due to potentially outdated firmware. While the devices’ screensaver functionality remains operational, attempts to cast content result in the error message, with no apparent user-side solutions like reboots or resets proving effective.
Newer Chromecast models, including the 3rd generation and Ultra, are reportedly unaffected. Although the error has led to speculation that Google has intentionally “bricked” the older devices or is announcing their end-of-life, this seems unlikely given the lack of official announcements from Google. The company made a similar move earlier this year with the original Chromecast, but even that device continues to function.
The issue is believed to be a server-side bug, and users are hopeful that Google will deploy a fix soon. Both the Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio were released in September 2015 and run the same 1.56.x firmware.
