Mon Mar 10 16:02:46 UTC 2025: ## Jadavpur University Roiled by Protests, Police Intervention, and Allegations of Assault

**Kolkata, March 10, 2025** – Jadavpur University remains embroiled in protests following a violent clash on March 1st, with students demanding union elections and accusing a professor of assault. Tensions escalated on Monday as police were deployed to the campus amid student demonstrations.

The initial clash occurred during a Trinamool Congress-aligned professors’ association convention. Students from Left-affiliated organizations protested, alleging that the Education Minister Bratya Basu’s driver injured a student, Indranuj Roy, who has since been discharged from the hospital after receiving 14 stitches to his eye. Police are investigating the incident and will conduct a forensic examination of the vehicle.

Students have staged protests since March 1st, issuing deadlines for the university administration to address their demands for long-overdue union elections. On Monday, students protested the presence of Professor Om Prakash Mishra, who is named in an FIR related to the March 1st incident. Posters accusing him of sexual harassment were found on his office door. Professor Mishra denies animosity towards the students, stating that the matter is under investigation and before the Calcutta High Court. The SFI, while not condoning attacks on individuals, called for action against the professor given the allegations.

The presence of police, deployed to escort Professor Mishra, further fueled the protests. While the ruling Trinamool Congress’ student wing welcomed the police intervention, Left-affiliated student groups strongly opposed it, filing a fresh petition in the Calcutta High Court alleging police harassment. The appearance of “Azad Kashmir” slogans on university walls added another layer of controversy to the already tense situation. A meeting between university officials and student representatives took place on Monday, but the outcome remains unclear. The situation at Jadavpur University continues to be volatile.
