Sun Mar 09 09:29:40 UTC 2025: ## Pregnant Woman Dies After Referral, Sparking Protests in Tamil Nadu

**Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu – March 9, 2025** – The death of a 30-year-old pregnant woman, G. Zaheera, has ignited protests in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Zaheera died Saturday while being transported to Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after being referred from a primary healthcare center (PHC) in Pudukottai.

Zaheera’s family alleges negligence at the Pudukottai PHC, claiming a lack of doctor and inadequate treatment by nurses. They state that despite arriving at the PHC at 7 a.m. in labor, she was only referred to the GMCH around 10:15 a.m. due to a lack of cervical dilation. Upon arrival at the GMCH, doctors pronounced her dead.

However, Thoothukudi Deputy Director (Health), Yazhini, refutes the claims of a doctor’s absence. She stated that a doctor was present and that Zaheera experienced a difficult labor. While acknowledging the delay in cervical dilation and subsequent referral, Yazhini noted that Zaheera’s vitals were stable before the ambulance transfer. The cause of death remains undetermined, pending a post-mortem report, though amniotic fluid embolism is a possibility.

A press release from the district administration supports Yazhini’s account, stating that Zaheera received thorough screening at the PHC and highlighting the recent addition of five new doctors to the facility. Despite these statements, Zaheera’s family continues to demand an inquiry into the alleged negligence. Investigations are ongoing.
