**PALAKKAD, Kerala –** The head of the Malankara Orthodox Church, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, has issued a strong warning to the Kerala government, threatening mass protests against a proposed liquor plant in Elapully. The Metropolitan, speaking at a public assembly organized by the Assembly of Christian Trust Services (ACTS) on Saturday, criticized the government’s handling of alcohol and drug proliferation in the state.
The protest, supported by various organizations including the ACTS and former Congress State president V.M. Sudheeran, decried the lack of transparency in the government’s approval of the brewery. Sudheeran warned of a severe public backlash against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, calling for the project’s withdrawal and a public apology.
The symbolic “torch of protest” was passed from the Metropolitan to Elapully panchayat president K. Revathy Babu, who also recognized women achievers in a concurrent International Women’s Day celebration. Several panchayat members and representatives from organizations such as the Kerala Madhya Virudha Samiti voiced their solidarity with the anti-brewery movement. The event concluded with speeches from various religious and community leaders.
