**Chennai, March 9, 2025** – The Chennai Highways Department is undertaking extensive repairs to footpaths across the city, addressing damage caused by various civic projects. The repairs, costing ₹3.5 crore, focus on arterial roads including GST Road, Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Poonamallee High Road, Taramani-Perungudi Road, and the southern sector of the Inner Ring Road.
Work involves repositioning and anchoring granite stones damaged during cable-laying, filling in missing sections, and reinstalling or repairing damaged steel handrails. Completed repairs are already visible in areas such as Vadapalani, and near several metro stations and prominent landmarks. Future work will extend to interior roads including Pammal Road, Mudichur Road, Tambaram-Velachery Road, and MMS Road.
While welcoming the repairs, residents like Ashok Nagar resident D. Vijayakumar highlighted the ongoing issue of footpath encroachments and the need for regular maintenance to prevent recurring damage. He also suggested adding small steps where raised footpaths pose accessibility challenges. The Highways Department has emphasized the importance of minimizing disruption during future civic works to prevent further damage to pedestrian infrastructure.
