Fri Mar 07 18:09:25 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Gears Up for Nationwide Economic Census

**Chennai, March 7, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government is preparing for the upcoming 8th Economic Census, a nationwide exercise scheduled to begin next month and run until December. The census, conducted every five years by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, aims to comprehensively count all establishments in the state.

State and district-level coordination committees have been established to oversee the process. The Chief Secretary will head the state-level committee, while District Collectors will lead their respective district committees. The census will record all establishments, including household enterprises, involved in non-farm, non-agricultural goods and services production and distribution.

This initiative follows the 7th Economic Census in 2019, which faced some challenges, including West Bengal’s non-participation and reservations regarding provisional results from several states. Tamil Nadu’s strong showing in the 6th Economic Census (2013-14) is noted, with the state holding the fourth-highest number of establishments (8.60%), employment (8.91%), and the largest share of larger establishments (13.81%) nationally. Furthermore, Tamil Nadu led the nation in the number of establishments under women entrepreneurship (13.51%). The upcoming census aims to provide updated data on various aspects of establishments and enterprises across the country.
