**VISAKHAPATNAM, March 8, 2025** – Andhra Pradesh now boasts its first comprehensive institute dedicated to treating blood disorders. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Blood Disorders, located at Unique Hospital in Arilova, Visakhapatnam, was inaugurated Friday by renowned haematologist Dr. Mammen Chandy.

The institute addresses a significant public health concern. Andhra Pradesh bears a substantial burden of hemoglobinopathies, with an estimated 2 million people affected by sickle cell disease, primarily in tribal communities. The prevalence of beta thalassemia carriers ranges from 0.2% to 21.8% of the population, highlighting the critical need for regular blood transfusions. Leukemia, a major concern nationwide, also necessitates advanced treatment options.

Attending the inauguration were Dr. Sadashivudu, Professor and HOD of Medical Oncology at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, and Dr. Voonna Muralikrishna, MD of Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital. They emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and modern treatments in improving survival rates for various blood cancers, which currently range from 30% to 80% depending on the type of leukemia.

The new institute is equipped to handle a wide spectrum of hematological conditions, from basic blood tests to advanced therapies such as CAR T-cell therapy, bone marrow transplants, and targeted therapies. This comprehensive approach aims to provide high-quality care to patients suffering from a range of blood disorders.
