**New Delhi, March 7, 2025** – India and the United States are set to negotiate a new bilateral trade agreement (BTA), according to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The announcement comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs against India, set to take effect April 2nd, 2025.
Jaiswal stated that the BTA aims to bolster two-way trade in goods and services, improve market access, and reduce trade barriers between the two nations. He confirmed that discussions are already underway following recent meetings between Indian Commerce and Industries Minister and their US counterparts.
The MEA also expressed concerns regarding a security breach during External Affairs Minister Jaishankar’s recent visit to the UK, stating that their deep concern has been conveyed to UK authorities. Furthermore, Jaiswal reiterated India’s support for a stable, peaceful, and inclusive Bangladesh, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes and inclusive elections.
