Thu Mar 06 16:01:17 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Sufi Heritage Festival to Celebrate Syncretic Culture

**NEW DELHI, March 6, 2025** – A major Sufi Heritage Festival is set to take place at Sunder Nursery in Delhi on March 8th and 9th, aiming to revive and celebrate the rich Sufi tradition in the city. The festival, directed by Yasmin Kidwai, will feature renowned artists like Rekha Bhardwaj and Dhruv Sangari, alongside the Nizami Bandhu qawwals.

Singer Rekha Bhardwaj, a disciple of Hazrat Inayat Khan, will perform her interpretations of classic Sufi compositions, including Amir Khusrau’s works. She emphasized the importance of Sufi thought in connecting with one’s inner self and taking responsibility for one’s actions, principles she believes are reflected in her authentic musical style.

Noted vocalist and Sufi scholar Dhruv Sangari highlighted the festival’s role in preserving Sufi heritage, often overlooked in favor of architectural preservation. He compared the global appeal of Qawwali to Jazz, emphasizing its improvisational nature and ability to connect with the soul.

The Nizami Bandhu, carrying on a 19-generation tradition of Qawwali, will also perform, showcasing the blend of classical ragas and contemporary influences in their interpretation of Sufi Kalam. Chand Nizami expressed the challenge and charm of Qawwali’s flexibility in raga selection.

The festival aims to fill the cultural void left by the pandemic, promoting Delhi as not only a political capital, but also a cultural epicenter. The diverse program includes performances celebrating female Sufi saints, art installations, and traditional culinary experiences, representing the inclusive ethos of Sufism. Kidwai stressed the importance of preserving Sufi heritage while being mindful of avoiding “Bollywoodisation” and maintaining authenticity. The festival promises a unique experience celebrating the spiritual and artistic expressions of Sufism.
