**INDIAN WELLS, Calif.** – Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, riding a wave of momentum after a breakthrough year, secured a thrilling victory in his BNP Paribas Open debut Thursday, defeating Britain’s Jacob Fearnley 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The 18-year-old, who received a wildcard entry, overcame a challenging third set and a windy California desert to claim the win.
Fonseca, currently ranked No. 80 in the world, dominated the first set before Fearnley rallied to even the match. However, Fonseca showcased his talent, winning the final five games of the third set, culminating in a stunning volley at match point.
“It’s a pleasure being here on center court at Indian Wells,” Fonseca said, calling the tournament a “paradise” and expressing gratitude for his wildcard entry. He acknowledged the difficult windy conditions, highlighting his resilience.
The victory follows Fonseca’s impressive recent achievements, including a straight-sets upset of Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open – his first win over a top-10 opponent – and his first ATP Tour title in Buenos Aires last month. He also enjoyed the enthusiastic support of a large Brazilian contingent at the ATP 1000 event.
Fonseca’s next opponent will be the No. 13 seed, Jack Draper.
In other news from the tournament, American Jenson Brooksby fought back from a dismal start to defeat Benjamin Bonzi of France 1-6, 7-5, 7-5, securing his first ATP Tour win in two years. Brooksby’s return to competitive tennis has been marked by a 13-month suspension for missed drug tests and subsequent injury struggles. He will now face Canada’s No. 17 seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime.
