**New Delhi, March 7, 2025** – Delhi will soon install vehicle detectors at toll plazas on its borders to enforce existing bans on older and polluting vehicles, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh announced today. These detectors will identify banned vehicle models and automatically flag overage vehicles based on their registration numbers and fitness certificates.
The system will prevent banned vehicles from entering the capital. However, vehicles merely passing through Delhi will not be fined, unless legally mandated by the Supreme Court. This measure aims to improve air quality in the city.
To comply with a 2014 NGT order and a 2018 Supreme Court ruling, overage vehicles (diesel vehicles older than 11 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years) requiring an NOC must now be transported on cranes to leave the city. Previously, these vehicles could be driven out after refueling.
Minister Singh also revealed a new crackdown on fuel stations supplying fuel to vehicles lacking valid fitness certificates, reinforcing the city’s commitment to cleaner air. A meeting with top transport officials yesterday initiated this intensive campaign against unregistered and overage vehicles.
