NEW DELHI, March 7, 2025 – Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh announced a major overhaul of the city’s healthcare system, promising significant improvements within the next 100 days. Key changes include the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) health insurance scheme, starting after March 8th. This marks a reversal from the previous AAP government, which did not implement the scheme.
The Minister cited a Comptroller and Auditor General report revealing that the previous administration awarded medicine tenders to blacklisted companies. He pledged to ensure Delhi residents receive high-quality medicines. The PM-JAY scheme provides ₹5 lakh annual health cover per family for secondary and tertiary care.
Further planned reforms include filling all vacant paramedical posts, preventing officers from holding multiple charges, and addressing the shortage of medicines in government hospitals. Dysfunctional Mohalla Clinics will be closed, and strict monitoring will be implemented for hospital bed allocation, including quotas for the Economically Weaker Sections. To improve access to dental care, 10 mobile dental vans will be deployed in rural areas initially, with plans for city-wide coverage later. The Delhi government will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for the execution of PM-JAY. Minister Singh stated his goal is to bring Delhi’s government hospitals up to the standard of private hospitals.
