**Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – March 7, 2025** – The begena, an ancient Ethiopian string instrument, is experiencing a resurgence, bringing solace and healing to the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. Once reserved for the Ethiopian elite and banned during the Derg regime, the instrument, resembling a harp, is now being used in nursing homes and even during surgeries.

Musicians, including Biruktawit Tasew and Ermias Haylay, are leading the revival. Their performances at Grace Nursing Home have reportedly brought peace and tranquility to residents, with some reporting reduced pain and improved sleep. Doctor Natnael Hailu, co-founder of the institution, noted the instrument’s calming effect on heart rate and blood pressure. Harvard cardiologist Gene Bukhman also commented on the potential positive impact of the begena’s melodies on those with chronic illnesses.

Haylay, who founded a school to teach the begena, has observed significant calming effects on patients with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and autism. Driven by the instrument’s therapeutic benefits, he aims to expand his teaching to a global audience. The begena’s resurgence underscores its cultural significance and its surprising therapeutic potential. The instrument’s 10 strings, traditionally made from sheep’s intestines, symbolize the Ten Commandments, reflecting its historical connection to the Ethiopian Tewahedo Church.
