BALTIMORE, MD – Adnan Syed, whose case gained international attention through the hit podcast “Serial,” will remain free on supervised release, a Baltimore judge ruled Thursday. Syed, convicted in 2000 of the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, had his life sentence overturned in 2022 but faced the possibility of returning to prison. Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer ruled that Syed does not pose a public danger and that a reduced sentence, under Maryland’s Juvenile Restoration Act, is in the interest of justice.
The decision comes after years of legal battles, including a prosecutor initially supporting the overturning of Syed’s conviction before later withdrawing that motion. While the current state’s attorney, Ivan J. Bates, supported the sentence reduction, citing Syed’s rehabilitation, Lee’s family vehemently opposed it, emphasizing the overwhelming evidence of Syed’s guilt and expressing a desire for him to take responsibility for his actions. Lee’s family maintains that Syed remains convicted of first-degree premeditated murder.
Syed’s lawyer celebrated the ruling as a victory, highlighting his positive contributions to the community since his release. Syed, who has always maintained his innocence, will now remain free under five years of supervised release. The ruling concludes a long and highly publicized legal saga, leaving lingering questions about justice and the impact of media attention on legal proceedings.
