NEW YORK – NBC News announced Wednesday that Tom Llamas will succeed Lester Holt as anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News,” becoming the first Latino to hold the position. Llamas, currently a senior national correspondent and anchor of “Top Story with Tom Llamas” on NBC News NOW, will assume his new role this summer.

Holt, who anchored “Nightly News” for a decade, announced his departure last month. He will transition to a full-time role at “Dateline.”

In a statement, NBC News executive vice president of programming Janelle Rodriguez praised Llamas’ “journalistic excellence, passionate storytelling and unyielding integrity.” She also highlighted his contribution to the growth of NBC News NOW.

Llamas expressed his honor and responsibility in taking on the role, emphasizing his commitment to delivering important news stories to viewers. He also paid tribute to Holt, calling him “one of the most trusted broadcasters of our time.”

Llamas’ career spans various news outlets, including Telemundo, WTVJ, WNBC, and ABC News. He rejoined NBC News in 2021 and has since covered numerous major national and international events, interviewing prominent figures such as President Zelenskyy and former President Trump.
