**Chennai, March 6, 2025** – Two Madras High Court judges lauded the Tamil Nadu Prisons and Correctional Services Department for the exemplary conditions at Puzhal Central Prison near Chennai. Justices M.S. Ramesh and N. Senthilkumar conducted a surprise inspection of the prison on March 5th, finding it to be hygienically maintained and providing inmates with high-quality food. The judges personally sampled the prison food, describing it as “sumptuous.” In addition, they spoke with several inmates who expressed satisfaction with both the food and overall prison conditions.
State Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohamed Jinnah informed the court that the state government plans to upgrade prison facilities across Tamil Nadu to international standards, citing examples such as farming initiatives at the Coimbatore open prison and a prisoner-run fuel station. The judges indicated their intention to initiate a suo motu case, pending the Chief Justice’s approval, to offer further suggestions for improvements to prison facilities. The SPP welcomed the court’s proposed involvement.
