Thu Mar 06 01:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Australia Captain Attributes India’s Champions Trophy Victory to Superior Play, Not Venue Advantage

**Dubai, UAE:** Australia’s captain, Steve Smith, dismissed claims that India’s dominance in the Champions Trophy semi-final was due to playing all their matches at the same venue in Dubai. Despite a spirited effort, Australia was comprehensively defeated by India by four wickets.

Smith conceded that India’s superior performance deserved the win. He noted that the pitch suited India’s spin and seam bowling attack, and that they simply outplayed Australia. “I think India played really good cricket,” Smith stated. “The surface suits their style, and they played well, they outplayed us, and they deserve the victory.”

While Australia’s initial batting performance showed promise, with Travis Head contributing a quick 39 runs, their inability to maintain crucial partnerships prevented them from reaching a more challenging total. Smith admitted that missed opportunities to extend partnerships cost them a score in the 290-300 range, ultimately settling for 264. He also acknowledged the pitch’s fatigue and noted that scores above 300 had been rare throughout the tournament.

Further hindering Australia’s efforts were dropped catches, including missed opportunities to dismiss Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the powerplay. Smith accepted responsibility, stating that these missed chances, especially with a modest target to defend, significantly impacted the outcome. “We dropped a couple of chances,” he said. “When you’re trying to squeeze the game and build pressure, you need to take those chances.” Despite the setbacks, Smith maintained that the dropped catches were simply part of the game.
