Thu Mar 06 00:10:00 UTC 2025: **Veteran Broadcaster Mike Tirico to Call Celtics Game, Prepares for NBC’s NBA Coverage**
BOSTON, MA – Veteran sportscaster Mike Tirico will be calling the Boston Celtics game against the Portland Trail Blazers on NBC Sports Boston Wednesday night. This serves as a warm-up for Tirico, who will be NBC’s lead NBA play-by-play announcer when the network’s new 11-year deal begins in October.
Tirico, renowned for his work at NBC on the Olympics and Sunday Night Football, hasn’t called NBA games regularly since 2016. He cited the need to shake off some rust after a nine-year hiatus from consistent NBA coverage. He’ll be joined by Celtics analyst Brian Scalabrine and sideline reporter Abby Chin.
Tirico expressed excitement about working with Scalabrine and Chin, and acknowledged the influence of retired Celtics broadcaster Mike Gorman on his style. He also highlighted the logistical challenges of coordinating NBC’s NBA coverage with its already packed schedule, which includes the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics in February. While details are still being finalized, Tirico confirmed he’ll call an Opening Day game and various games throughout the season, significantly increasing his workload post-Olympics. He expressed a playful anticipation of finally being able to use “we” when referring to the home team in his broadcasts.
