**Navi Mumbai, India – March 5, 2025** – The annual migration of tens of thousands of Greater and Lesser flamingos to the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary in Navi Mumbai has once again captivated the world. Stunning images and videos of the vibrant pink birds soaring over the wetlands have gone viral on social media, with Singapore’s High Commissioner to India sharing a particularly striking video on X (formerly Twitter). The spectacle underscores the ecological importance of the sanctuary, a vital habitat nestled in the heart of India’s financial capital.
This year’s flamingo influx coincides with a significant boost for conservation efforts. Amazon’s Right Now Climate Fund has pledged $1.2 million over three years to protect the flamingo habitats along Thane Creek. This funding, in partnership with Hasten Regeneration, will support a multifaceted initiative: a large-scale cleanup of plastic and other waste from the wetlands, the planting of 150 hectares of mangroves (approximately 375,000 trees), and the creation of job opportunities for local fishing communities, particularly empowering women.
Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, stated that the project aims to clean up habitats supporting 180 bird species, including the iconic flamingos, restore mangrove forests, and benefit local communities. The initiative highlights the growing global awareness of the importance of protecting vital ecosystems and the positive impact of corporate social responsibility in conservation. The annual flamingo migration continues to draw nature enthusiasts and photographers, further solidifying the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary’s position as an ecological marvel and a significant tourist attraction.
