Tue Mar 04 12:15:38 UTC 2025: ## Plastic Treaty Talks Postponed: Geneva to Host Next Round

**Geneva, Switzerland –** Negotiations for a global legally binding treaty on plastic pollution will continue in Geneva from August 5th to 14th, the United Nations Environment Programme announced on March 4th. The fifth Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) meeting in Busan, South Korea, aimed to finalize the treaty, but failed to reach an agreement on key issues.

Disagreements centered around capping plastic production, managing harmful chemicals, and securing funding for developing nations. Over 100 countries supported a draft including production reduction targets, while a counter-proposal from oil and petrochemical producing states omitted these caps.

The postponement comes amid growing concerns about international cooperation on environmental issues. Recent shifts in global diplomacy, including the US’s previous withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and the EU’s softening of some climate policies, cast a shadow over the prospects for a successful treaty. The limited success of the recent UN climate talks in Baku, Azerbaijan, further highlights these challenges. The upcoming Geneva meeting (INC 5.2) will face the difficult task of bridging the significant divides between nations on this critical environmental issue.
