Wed Mar 05 16:34:29 UTC 2025: ## Thiruvananthapuram City Police Propose Jurisdiction Expansion to Curb Rising Crime

**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 5, 2025** – The Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissionerate has proposed a significant expansion of its jurisdiction, aiming to address a surge in crime within the city’s rapidly developing suburbs. The proposal, currently under review by the State Police Headquarters, would incorporate ten police stations currently under the Thiruvananthapuram Rural police’s purview.

This expansion is driven by the escalating crime rates and policing challenges posed by major infrastructure projects like the Vizhinjam seaport, the outer ring road, and the expansion of Technopark. A report compiled by former District Police Chief G. Sparjan Kumar highlights a concerning increase in serious crimes, including murder, rape, and cheating, between 2019 and 2023. The report also anticipates challenges associated with the influx of transient workers and increased traffic from these developments.

The proposed merger includes the Kadinamkulam, Mangalapuram, Pothencode, Vattappara, Aruvikkara, Vilappilsala, Malayinkeezhu, Naruvamoodu, Balaramapuram, and Kanjiramkulam police stations, extending the City police’s reach into areas including Neyyattinkara, Kalliyoor, Pallichal, Vattappara, Venganoor, and Vilappil. The proposal also suggests creating two new police sub-divisions and appointing two additional Deputy Commissioners for law and order, mirroring the structure of the Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi Commissionerates.

The proposal, echoing a similar one from the previous year, is intended to improve crime control, traffic management, and address concerns about drug proliferation in these areas. Currently, the City police oversee 25 stations, while the Rural police manage 40. The decision on the jurisdiction expansion awaits the State Police Headquarters’ final approval.
