Wed Mar 05 08:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Aussie Star Steve Smith Retires from One-Day Internationals
**Dubai, UAE** – Australian cricket legend Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket, effective immediately. The 35-year-old middle-order batsman made the announcement following Australia’s semi-final loss to India in the Champions Trophy, a match in which he top-scored with 73 runs.
Smith, a two-time World Cup winner (2015 and 2023), leaves the ODI format with an impressive record: 5800 runs in 170 matches at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He also contributed 28 wickets and 90 catches during his career, having debuted as a leg-spinning all-rounder. His highest ODI score was a magnificent 164 against New Zealand in 2016.
“It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said in a Cricket Australia media release. He cited a desire to allow younger players to prepare for the 2027 World Cup as a key factor in his decision. He will, however, continue playing Test cricket and Twenty20 Internationals.
Smith’s contribution to Australian ODI cricket extends beyond his batting prowess. He captained the side in 64 matches, winning 32 and losing 28, after taking over from Michael Clarke. He most recently served as interim captain during the Champions Trophy due to Pat Cummins’ injury.
George Bailey, chair of men’s selectors, expressed Cricket Australia’s full support for Smith’s decision, praising his exemplary record and legacy as one of Australia’s greatest ODI players. Bailey emphasized Smith’s continued commitment to Test cricket, highlighting his vital role within the team. Smith himself expressed his excitement for upcoming Test matches, including the World Test Championship Final and the series against the West Indies and England.
