**Beijing, China** – A team of Chinese scientists has unveiled Zuchongzhi-3, a superconducting quantum computer prototype boasting 105 readable qubits and 182 couplers. According to a study published in *Physical Review Letters*, the researchers claim Zuchongzhi-3 achieves quantum random circuit sampling (RCS) tasks a quadrillion times faster than the world’s most powerful classical supercomputer and a million times faster than Google’s Sycamore processor.

This significant advancement builds upon the RCS benchmark set by Google’s Sycamore in 2019. While Sycamore famously completed a task in 200 seconds that would have taken a classical supercomputer 10,000 years, Zuchongzhi-3 surpasses even Google’s latest October 2024 results by six orders of magnitude. The researchers attribute this leap to optimized processor fabrication and wiring.

Professor Zhu Xiaobo of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), where Zuchongzhi-3 was developed, highlighted the improved readout and control precision. He emphasized the long-term goal of reducing error rates to create a fault-tolerant, general-purpose quantum computer. Such a breakthrough, he added, would revolutionize information processing and have profound implications for national security, artificial intelligence, biology, and pharmaceutical development. The researchers believe their work expands the gap between classical and quantum computing capabilities, paving the way for future applications addressing complex real-world problems.
