Geneva – Canada has formally challenged the Trump administration’s new tariffs on Canadian goods at the World Trade Organization (WTO), the organization confirmed Wednesday. The complaint follows similar action by China. The tariffs, imposed by President Donald Trump, amount to a 25% increase on various imports and are part of his ongoing trade war with several nations.
Canadian Ambassador to the WTO Nadia Theodore announced the move on LinkedIn, stating that the U.S. decision left Canada with no choice but to seek WTO consultations. The tariffs, initially announced and then paused in January, were reinstated this week after Trump cited a lack of progress on issues of illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
The retaliatory tariffs have sparked a trade war, with Mexico and China also imposing their own tariffs on U.S. goods. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau strongly condemned the tariffs, accusing Trump of attempting to cripple Canada’s economy. While U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick expressed optimism for a resolution, Trump has already threatened further action against Canada. The WTO dispute proceedings are now underway, marking a significant escalation in trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada.
