**Leh, Ladakh –** Major Amirtharaj NS, an Indian Army officer, has achieved a remarkable feat by completing the Pangong Frozen Half Marathon, a Guinness World Record-holding event held at 13,862 feet above sea level on the frozen Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh. The 21.9-kilometer race, organized by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh with support from the Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police, challenged runners with extreme conditions including temperatures plummeting to -35 degrees Celsius and low oxygen levels.
Despite initially disliking running, Major Amirtharaj, inspired by his father’s own marathon achievements, trained rigorously for the event, overcoming challenges such as high altitude sickness and frostbite risks. He completed the race in three hours and ten minutes, dedicating his achievement to his children. He described the second half of the race as a mental battle, emphasizing the importance of camaraderie and perseverance. The marathon also served as a platform to promote battlefield tourism and ecological sustainability in the region.
