Wed Mar 05 07:15:58 UTC 2025: ## 1,300 Tonnes of Garbage Removed from Yamuna River in 10 Days: Delhi Minister

**New Delhi –** Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma announced today that 1,300 tonnes of garbage have been removed from the Yamuna River in the past 10 days. This intensive cleanup effort follows a key election promise by the BJP to restore the river, a commitment underscored by Minister Verma’s own boat inspection of the river today.

The minister highlighted improvements made to flood control infrastructure, noting that previously closed floodgates have been repaired and raised to mitigate future flood risks, a crucial step after the devastating floods Delhi experienced earlier this year.

Beyond the immediate cleanup, Verma detailed a comprehensive plan to revitalize the Yamuna. This includes the Delhi Development Authority’s efforts to restore the riverbed and remove encroachments. Furthermore, the government plans to install sewage treatment plants (STPs) for all 18 major drains currently discharging effluents into the river within the next two years. This involves both the construction of new STPs and the expansion of existing ones to increase capacity.

Verma contrasted the current government’s actions with the perceived inaction of previous administrations, claiming that no significant work had been undertaken to clean the Yamuna in the past decade. He emphasized the involvement of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the current restoration project, signaling a high-level commitment to the ambitious cleanup and revitalization efforts.
