Wed Mar 05 12:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Ramadan Begins: Muftis Issue Guidelines on Zakat and Fitra

**LUCKNOW, INDIA** – With Ramadan underway, religious leaders have issued guidelines on the obligatory Zakat and Fitra. Mufti Salman and Maulana Hafiz Ziaur Rahman clarified the amounts and eligibility for these charitable contributions.

Fitra, a mandatory donation, is equivalent to 1.75 kg of wheat per person. Those opting for a cash payment should contribute between ₹50 and ₹53 per individual. Importantly, Fitra must also be paid for children born before Eid prayers.

Regarding Zakat, a mandatory form of charity for the wealthy, the religious scholars explained that it applies to those possessing assets equivalent to 7.5 tola gold, 52.5 tola silver, or the cash equivalent. Eligible individuals must donate 2.5% of their total savings.

Both Zakat and Fitra are intended to support the poor and needy, including students in religious schools (madrasas). Religious scholars emphasize that Fitra must be paid before Eid prayers.
