**Bengaluru, India** – Ola Founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has implemented a new weekly reporting system for all employees, mirroring a similar policy recently adopted by Elon Musk at the Department of Government Efficiency. The initiative, dubbed “Kya Chal Raha Hai?” (What’s Going On?), requires employees to submit a weekly email detailing 3-5 bullet points of their accomplishments to both their managers and a designated company email address. The first report was due the day after the announcement, with future reports due every Sunday.
This move comes amidst significant restructuring at Ola, including recent and planned layoffs at its electric vehicle arm, Ola Electric. The company is reportedly planning to lay off over 1,000 employees, impacting various departments, in an effort to cut costs and improve profitability. This marks the second major round of job cuts in five months.
Aggarwal’s directive, similar to Musk’s policy for US federal employees, aims to increase accountability and efficiency. However, Musk’s policy has drawn criticism for potentially negatively impacting employee morale. This is not Aggarwal’s first attempt to tighten performance standards; in December, he issued an internal email addressing concerns about employee attendance. The impact of Aggarwal’s new reporting requirement on Ola’s workforce remains to be seen.
