Tue Mar 04 15:18:39 UTC 2025: ## Puducherry Government Cracks Down on Backdoor Appointments After Supreme Court Ruling

**Puducherry, March 4, 2025** – Following a Supreme Court rebuke regarding illegal appointments at Motilal Nehru Government Polytechnic College, the Puducherry government has issued a stern warning against backdoor hiring practices. An inter-departmental note, issued by Under Secretary V. Jaishankar, mandates strict adherence to recruitment rules across all government departments, autonomous bodies, and corporations within the Union Territory.

The Supreme Court’s action stemmed from a case involving approximately 20 lecturers who sought regularization of their service after working on a contract basis since 2006. The court, while granting regularization in this specific instance, criticized the irregular appointment process and ordered the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to investigate. The SC’s ruling emphasized the importance of transparent recruitment, prioritizing the selection of the “best” available talent through open advertisement and application processes.

The government’s new directive leaves no room for deviation from established recruitment rules. Any violations will be met with severe disciplinary action, including against officials responsible for illegal appointments. This move follows previous circulars aimed at preventing backdoor entries and reflects the government’s commitment to complying with the Supreme Court’s mandate for fair and transparent public employment practices.
