**Njombe, Tanzania** – A Tanzanian man, Mzee Ernesto Muinuchi Kapinga, has captivated global attention with his extraordinary family. Kapinga, now a patriarch, lives with 16 wives (including seven sisters), 104 children, and 144 grandchildren in a bustling homestead in Njombe. Four of his wives have sadly passed away.
Kapinga’s journey began in 1961, inspired by his father’s wish to expand their family clan. He married his first wife that year, and his first child was born in 1962. His father even paid the dowry for five of his wives to help fulfill this vision.
This sprawling family operates as a self-sufficient community, cultivating crops like corn, beans, cassava, and bananas to support themselves. Any surplus is traded for other necessities. Kapinga emphasizes that his wives are the core of the family’s cohesion, working together to manage their large household. He describes his role as a guide and impartial mediator in resolving any conflicts that arise. The wives prioritize open communication and resolving issues amongst themselves before seeking his counsel.
Despite the sheer size of his family, Kapinga admits to struggling to remember all his children and grandchildren’s names, relying on visual recognition. He has also suffered the loss of over 40 children throughout the years due to illness and accidents. Despite these tragedies, he expresses contentment with his remarkably large and close-knit family. His story serves as a testament to the unique family structures and traditions found in parts of Africa.
