**Cape Canaveral, FL** – SpaceX is poised to launch its Starship megarocket on Monday, marking its second attempt after a January mishap. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) cleared the launch following an investigation into the previous test flight, which saw the upper stage explode eight minutes into the flight due to a propellant leak. While debris rained down on parts of Turks and Caicos, no injuries were reported.
SpaceX’s internal investigation pinpointed a propellant leak in the “attic” section of Starship as the likely cause of the January explosion. The company claims to have implemented several hardware and operational changes to address this issue, although specifics remain undisclosed.
This upcoming test flight, the eighth for Starship, will attempt to deploy four mock Starlink satellites – a first for the vehicle. The ambitious plan also includes a return-to-launchpad maneuver for the first stage, utilizing giant mechanical arms on the launch tower, a feat successfully achieved in the January test. Success would be a major step towards SpaceX’s goal of creating a fully reusable rocket system.
The 400-foot-tall Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, is crucial to NASA’s Artemis program, with SpaceX tasked with carrying astronauts to the moon in 2027. Future Mars missions are also envisioned for the vehicle. The planned flight, originally scheduled for Friday, will see the upper stage travel for about an hour before a planned splashdown in the Indian Ocean.
Concerns have been raised regarding potential conflicts of interest, with reports suggesting that the Department of Government Efficiency, led by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, has had a presence within FAA facilities. Senator Ed Markey has voiced concerns about this. However, the FAA ultimately cleared the launch. The success of Monday’s launch remains to be seen.
