**New Delhi, March 3, 2025** – Eminent Indian sculptor Himmat Shah passed away on Sunday at the age of 92 after suffering a heart attack at Jaipur’s Shalby Hospital. Shah, known for his innovative and individualistic approach to sculpture, remained active in his studio until his final days, despite recent health concerns.
Born in Lothal, Gujarat in 1933, Shah’s artistic journey began with an early exposure to terracotta art from the Indus Valley Civilization. His education included studies at Gharshala, the J.J. School of Art in Bombay, and Baroda, where he was influenced by renowned artists N.S. Bendre and K.G. Subramanyan. Further honing his skills, he received a French government scholarship to study etching in Paris.
Fellow artist Gulammohammed Sheikh described Shah as an ebullient and jovial individual who developed a highly unique style, particularly in his depictions of the human head. Proficient in various mediums including terracotta and bronze, Shah continued to create art relentlessly well into his nineties.
Shah’s work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including his last, “Ninety and After: Excursions of a Free Imagination,” held late last year in Delhi. Major retrospectives of his work were also presented by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA), most notably “Hammer on the Square” in 2016. These exhibitions highlighted his experimental approach, blending local traditions with innovative forms and mediums.
The Anant Art Gallery, which hosted his final exhibition, described Shah as a fiercely independent artist who shaped a unique visual modernist vocabulary. Tributes have poured in from the art world, celebrating his relentless dedication, playful spirit, and unwavering commitment to his craft. Shah is survived by two sisters. His last rites will be held in Jaipur.
