**Sikar, Rajasthan, India –** A forgotten jewel of Rajasthan, the town of Ramgarh Shekhawati, is experiencing a renaissance thanks to the Vedaaranya Heritage and Healing Festival (VHAH Fest). For years neglected and falling into disrepair, this once-prosperous town, famed for its stunning havelis (traditional mansions) and rich history, is attracting renewed attention through cultural tourism.
The 9th annual VHAH Fest, held in February 2025, saw a five-day celebration of Ramgarh Shekhawati’s art, culture, and architectural heritage. Organized by Shruti Poddar of the Shruti Foundation in association with the Rajasthan Tourism Department, the festival showcases the town’s unique story. Legend states that Ramgarh Shekhawati, built in the late 1700s by wealthy merchants from the Churu kingdom, was once considered the most beautiful town in the world. However, the British colonial era saw traders relocating, leading to the town’s decline.
Now, through the VHAH Fest and ongoing restoration efforts, several havelis are being renovated, offering tourists unique accommodation experiences. The festival itself provides a platform for showcasing local talent, with performances by renowned artists like Padmashri Geeta Chandran (Bharatanatyam), Vidushi Sunanda Sharma (classical vocals), and Vidushi Sujata Mohapatra (Odissi).
**Key attractions in Ramgarh Shekhawati highlighted by the festival include:**
* **Ramgarh Fort:** A historic fort with intricate artwork, though currently in need of further restoration.
* **Mohar Haveli:** (Museum of Heritage and Art at Ramgarh), featuring stunning blue and green frescoes and a new art gallery showcasing works by Raja Ravi Varma and M.V. Dhurandhar.
* **Sand Dunes:** Offering activities such as paragliding, zorbing, and camel rides, and breathtaking sunset views.
* **Veda Temple:** A unique temple dedicated to ancient Indian wisdom and knowledge, reflecting the town’s past as a significant learning center.
* **Seth Ramgopal Poddar Chhatri:** A beautiful structure adorned with frescoes depicting scenes from the Ramayana and other stories.
* **Local Cuisine:** Visitors can enjoy the region’s famous dal kachoris and laddoos.
Ramgarh Shekhawati is accessible via Churu Railway Station, approximately 15 km away. The Grand Shekhawati Hotel, located near the station, offers convenient accommodation. The VHAH Fest is the ideal time to explore this revitalized historical gem, experiencing its unique charm and contributing to its continued preservation.
