Mon Mar 03 12:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Ramadan Begins in Delhi: Jama Masjid Witnesses Festive Atmosphere Amidst Clarifications on Observances

**New Delhi, March 2, 2025** – The holy month of Ramadan commenced on March 2nd, with Muslims across India observing the first fast. Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and charity, sees Muslims abstaining from food and drink from sunrise to sunset for 30 days. The first day saw devotees congregating at mosques and Eidgahs across the nation, including Delhi’s Jama Masjid, which was filled with a festive atmosphere.

While the spirit of Ramadan is marked by community and devotion, several common questions and misconceptions surrounding the fast have arisen. To address these, NDTV interviewed Sunni scholar Mufti Arham Jhinjhanvi and Shia scholar Maulana Fasi Haider, clarifying several points of confusion.

The scholars emphasized that Ramadan’s concept is divinely ordained, a month for spiritual growth and self-discipline. Fasting is not merely about abstaining from food but also from evil deeds. Moreover, Maulana Fasi Haider highlighted the health benefits of fasting, citing medical endorsements for its positive impact on health. He clarified that swallowing saliva does not break the fast, while vomiting or submerging the face in water does.

Regarding work commitments, the scholars confirmed that fulfilling work obligations does not invalidate the fast. The scholars also clarified that while fasting is obligatory for those physically capable, exemptions are granted to the sick, elderly, and young children. Children become obligated to fast upon reaching the age of 14.

The scholars stressed the importance of devoting time to prayer, Quranic recitation, and acts of charity during Ramadan, emphasizing the significance of helping the needy, particularly neighbors. The importance of Zakat (obligatory charity) and Fitra (charity given at the end of Ramadan) was also highlighted to ensure the poor receive their due.

Prime Minister Modi, Rahul Gandhi, and Arvind Kejriwal were among those who extended greetings on the commencement of Ramadan.
