Mon Mar 03 10:02:00 UTC 2025: ## Kerala’s “Ayogyam, Anandam” Cancer Screening Campaign Sees Encouraging Results in First Month
**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 3, 2025** – Over five lakh people in Kerala underwent cancer screenings in the first month of the state’s year-long cancer detection campaign, “Ayogyam, Anandam – Keep Cancers Away,” Health Minister Veena George announced on Monday. The campaign, launched on World Cancer Day (February 4th, 2025), focuses on early detection of breast and cervical cancers in women.
Of the half-million screened, 26,000 individuals were flagged for further diagnostic tests due to suspected cancer, with 85 cases confirmed so far. A total of 5.9 lakh women were screened for breast and cervical cancer during this period.
Minister George highlighted the initiative’s crucial role in combating late-stage cancer diagnoses. She explained that the majority of cancer cases are detected in advanced stages, leading to complex and costly treatment with reduced survival rates. A population survey revealed 9 lakh people potentially at risk, with only 1.5 lakh currently accessing screening centers. The campaign aims to proactively screen a healthy population above 30 years of age to identify asymptomatic individuals.
The campaign leverages a decentralized approach, involving government and private hospitals, local bodies, voluntary organizations, and community groups. Cancer care facilities have also been established in 25 hospitals across all districts. Preliminary screenings occur at Family Health Centers and Primary Health Centers, with suspected cases referred to medical officers and subsequently to specialists for confirmation.
